Officials in Ljubljana have signed a 20-year agreement with mobility provider Avant Car to roll out a public electric vehicle rental and car-sharing service, expanding on a previous pilot programme.
Under the agreement, the city will invest €11.4 million, largely allocated to the development of 400 dedicated parking spaces for shared electric vehicles. Avant Car will contribute €18.7 million, including €6.2 million in the first year, to support the deployment and operation of the service.
In a statement, city officials said: “Within the City of Ljubljana, we will establish 400 parking spaces for car-sharing, 400 electric vehicles, and 160 charging stations (of which 200 parking spaces, 200 vehicles, and 40 charging stations will be available at the project’s launch).” The city added that additional car-sharing locations will also be introduced outside the ring road and in more remote areas.
The service will be operated under Avant Car’s Avant2Go platform, which runs 24 hours a day. According to Balkan Green Energy News, the platform already has more than 80,000 registered users. The company plans to offer vouchers and incentives to encourage uptake among residents.
“Car sharing is an excellent solution for Ljubljana, as it allows us to reduce the number of privately owned vehicles and traffic congestion,” said Zoran Janković. “I am confident that our residents will realize that Ljubljana offers so many efficient and high-quality mobility options that they will give up at least their third and second cars and travel around the city in a more sustainable way.”
The initiative builds on earlier deployments by Avant Car in other European cities. In 2024, the company launched a similar electric car-sharing scheme in Klagenfurt, Austria, using models such as the Renault Twingo Electric, Peugeot e-208 and Peugeot e-2008.
