Gotion High-tech has started mass production of its Unified Cells for Volkswagen, with the first deliveries to the German automaker scheduled for November 20.
The production marks a key milestone in the five-year strategic partnership between Volkswagen, its battery unit PowerCo, and Gotion.
The Unified Cells are a standardized battery solution designed to accommodate multiple chemical systems and vehicle platforms. Gotion said the cells feature improvements in integration efficiency, fast-charging performance, safety, and low-temperature adaptability. “The delivered unified cells achieve world-class levels in energy density, safety performance, and cost control,” said Zhang Hongli, Gotion director and chairman of its Hefei base.
A delivery ceremony was held in Hefei, Anhui province, attended by Volkswagen CTO Thomas Schmall, PowerCo CEO Frank Blome, and Gotion chairman Li Zhen. During the event, Gotion also unveiled a battery pack system developed from the Unified Cells.
The company plans to supply battery products for multiple Volkswagen platforms, with production capacity at its Hefei Xinzhan facility reaching 20 GWh annually.
Volkswagen has been a long-term partner and now the largest shareholder of Gotion. The companies first began collaborating in July 2021 with a framework agreement under which Gotion developed the initial generation of Unified Cells for Volkswagen’s production models in China. The current production ramp-up represents the start of the partnership’s large-scale manufacturing phase, spanning from 2026 to 2032.
