Tesla has reached a new production milestone with the completion of its 5-millionth battery pack at Giga Shanghai, the company’s largest manufacturing facility globally.
Tesla said its battery packs are independently developed with proprietary cell chemistry and structural design, offering high performance, strong energy density, and resilience in cold weather.

The company added that the system supports mileage that exceeds the vehicle’s lifecycle and adheres to safety standards that are significantly higher than industry norms.
Although Tesla engineers its own battery pack systems, Giga Shanghai does not produce its own battery cells. The factory instead sources cells from China’s CATL and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, integrating them into Tesla’s battery packs.

Construction of the Shanghai facility began on January 7, 2019, and operations started by the end of that year. It was also China’s first wholly foreign-owned automotive manufacturing project. The plant began Model 3 deliveries to local customers in January 2020, followed by Model Y deliveries in January 2021.
With an annual production capacity of around 1 million vehicles, Giga Shanghai plays a dual role — meeting domestic market demand and serving as a key export hub for Tesla’s global operations.
