Tesla has launched a six-seat version of its Model Y sport utility vehicle in China, featuring an AI-powered assistant that enables passengers in any row to control vehicle functions through voice commands.
The Model Y L, designed as Tesla’s first three-row SUV, provides rear passengers who are unable to access the touchscreen with the ability to manage air conditioning, music, and other infotainment settings. The virtual assistant incorporates seat-based spatial awareness, allowing the system to identify the passenger issuing commands and limiting control if restrictions are enabled.
Just checked out the Tesla Model YL in person today and gave the third row a real test drive (well, more like a seat test). Here are my quick impressions:

Unlike in the United States, where Tesla vehicles use its Grok AI platform, the assistant in China is powered by domestic generative AI models such as DeepSeek to comply with local regulations. The system can also sustain conversations across multiple passengers without repeated activation, functioning in a way similar to smart speakers.
Tesla has positioned the Model Y L as a vehicle tailored to families, with its expanded third-row seating and localized AI assistant designed to improve accessibility and passenger convenience. The company indicated that the “Hey, Tesla” wake word and seat-specific AI recognition may later be introduced to other markets.
