High-power charging network operator Ionity has applied for more than €6 million in funding under Spain’s Moves III programme to support the construction of over 20 new ultra-rapid charging stations across the country, targeting underserved regions and bolstering long-distance electric vehicle (EV) travel.
Each planned station will include an average of six high-power charge points, capable of delivering up to 350 kW, enabling EVs to recover hundreds of kilometres of range in just 15 to 20 minutes. The rollout spans over ten Autonomous Communities, with Ionity intentionally selecting areas with low EV penetration or sparse charging infrastructure.
“The new charging locations will play a key role in bridging regional gaps and supporting Spain’s long-distance travel corridors,” the company said, noting that part of the expansion also supports cross-border traffic integration into the pan-European HPC network.
Ionity has already received grant approvals from regional agencies in Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community, Castilla y León, Galicia, and Andalusia. Applications are still pending in Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, and a second phase in Galicia.
The initiative is part of Spain’s Moves III programme, launched in 2021 and expanded multiple times. As of 2024, the programme has a total funding pool of €1.735 billion, with €876 million already distributed to regional authorities responsible for awarding grants. The scheme supports both EV infrastructure development and incentives for electric vehicle purchases.
Ionity’s effort underscores the increasing importance of public-private cooperation to scale up charging infrastructure in regions where EV adoption is still in early stages. The proposed network expansion is expected to significantly improve access to ultra-fast charging and accelerate Spain’s transition to electric mobility.
