ZF Friedrichshafen has secured a multi-year contract to supply thousands of AxTrax 2 LF electric portal axles to a leading Indian bus manufacturer, its Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division said. The components will support both India’s domestic public transport sector and international export programs, with initial deliveries scheduled for 2026.

The AxTrax 2 LF is designed specifically for low-floor electric buses, integrating propulsion, braking, and suspension into a single compact unit. ZF said the architecture frees up interior space for batteries and passengers while simplifying vehicle design for manufacturers through a modular platform adaptable to different markets.

According to the company, the latest-generation axle delivers about 20% greater energy efficiency than its predecessor, potentially reducing battery requirements and extending driving range. The powertrain uses dual permanent-magnet synchronous hairpin motors paired with an 800-volt silicon carbide inverter and oil-cooling system, enabling continuous output of up to 360 kW and peak torque of 36,800 Nm.

The system is also engineered for demanding urban operating conditions, including the ability to climb gradients of up to 25% with a 30-metric-ton articulated bus using a single driven axle. ZF said such performance characteristics could help transit operators lower total cost of ownership while meeting zero-emission targets.

India’s rapidly expanding urban transport networks have made the country a key market for electric buses, while global demand for zero-emission commercial vehicles continues to grow. Andreas Moser, head of ZF’s CVS division and responsible for the India region, said the order underscores strong international interest in advanced electric drivetrain technologies for public transit.
