XPeng Motors Preparing to Launch X9, its First Multi-Purpose Electric Vehicle

Less than two months after unveiling their fifth electric vehicle (EV) model, the G6, XPeng Motors is already making headway on their sixth model, known as the X9. This new addition to their lineup marks the Chinese automaker’s foray into the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment, with a specific focus on targeting overseas markets.

XPeng Motors has been making significant strides throughout 2023, particularly in the past few months. Following the introduction of their advanced and capable Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the company introduced their SEPA 2.0 modular EV architecture designed to support these systems.

Merely two days later, the public was granted a first official glimpse of the G6, an electric coupe SUV built on the new platform. Production is reportedly underway, with initial deliveries to customers in China expected imminently, and plans for shipments to the European Union presumed to follow suit.

Previously, it was typical to wait several months, if not a year, for news about XPeng’s latest EV models. However, according to a recent social media post by the CEO and Chairman, plans for an MPV are already underway.

XPeng Motors and its CEO have hinted at their intention to develop and sell a multi-purpose EV, tapping into the niche market in China that values spaciousness (seven seats) and adaptability, catering to needs such as taxi services, family outings, or transporting larger groups along with their belongings.

During an earnings call earlier this month, XPeng executives reaffirmed their plans to introduce an MPV codenamed X9, slated for release in the fourth quarter of this year. However, the recent Weibo post from XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng suggests that X9 will be the official model name. The post reads:

“In addition to the G6, we have been refining our new MPV—the X9 recently. We aim to utilize this product to tap into the ‘young’ MPV market.”

Traditionally, the MPV market may not have been regarded as particularly appealing or trendy for younger customers, unless they have larger families. Overseas, there are only a limited number of viable models—around four to five. XPeng aims to break the mold with the X9, by offering an all-electric MPV that boasts a sleeker and more attractive design compared to models such as the Buick GL8 or Denza D9, which resemble upgraded minivans.

Other innovative EV companies have recently ventured into this segment as well. Geely’s all-electric ZEEKR brand introduced an MPV named the 009 in China in January, further intensifying competition in this small market segment. More details about XPeng’s X9 are expected to be unveiled soon, allowing us to gain a better understanding of their approach.
