Xiaomi has officially introduced the name “Sky Nomad,” fueling expectations that the company is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio beyond its existing models.
The announcement was made through Xiaomi EV’s official Weibo account, where the company described Sky Nomad as “a new name about space and life” but did not specify whether it represents a standalone automotive brand or a new product series.
Xiaomi Confirms New Name
The announcement marks the first official confirmation of the Sky Nomad name following months of market speculation.
While Xiaomi did not reveal the official Chinese branding during the announcement, the company has registered social media accounts under the name “Xiaomi Pengcheng,” which is widely believed to correspond with the Sky Nomad identity.
Trademark records from China’s National Intellectual Property Administration show Xiaomi has been filing applications for both the English “SkyNomad” and its Chinese trademarks since August 2025.
Despite confirming the name, Xiaomi did not address ongoing speculation regarding its positioning within the company’s EV strategy.
New SUV Expected to Lead Expansion
Earlier reports suggested Sky Nomad would become an independent vehicle brand with its own identity, separate from Xiaomi’s primary branding.
More recent reports, however, indicate it could instead become a dedicated product series within Xiaomi EV.
According to local media outlet Cailian, citing people familiar with the matter, Sky Nomad will represent Xiaomi EV’s next major vehicle lineup following the SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV.
The report said the series adopts a new design language and will compete in China’s full-size family SUV segment alongside models such as the Li Auto Li L9 and Huawei-backed Aito M9.
Previous reports from 21jingji indicated the first model, internally known as Kunlun N3, will be a full-size extended-range electric SUV measuring more than 5.3 meters in length.
The vehicle is expected to feature a battery pack exceeding 70 kilowatt-hours, providing an estimated battery-only driving range of between 400 and 500 kilometers.
According to the report, Xiaomi has selected Sunwoda and CALB as battery suppliers, with the companies expected to provide approximately 60% and 40% of battery production, respectively.
Expanding Into the EREV Market
The upcoming model will mark Xiaomi’s entry into China’s growing extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) segment, where a gasoline engine functions as a generator to recharge the battery and extend driving range.
Industry reports suggest Sky Nomad models could start at around 200,000 yuan, positioning Xiaomi to compete more directly with established brands such as Li Auto and Aito in the large family SUV market.
Earlier leaked information indicates the SUV could be offered in both five-seat and seven-seat configurations with a rugged exterior design, semi-hidden door handles, and, on some variants, a deployable rooftop tent integrated into the roof structure.
Regulatory approval for the program was secured in June after China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved Xiaomi EV to manufacture extended-range electric passenger vehicles at its Beijing production facility.
The expansion into EREVs forms part of Xiaomi’s broader growth strategy for 2026. The company has set a delivery target of 550,000 vehicles for the year, representing an increase of approximately 34% compared with its estimated deliveries in 2025.
