Automotive supplier Webasto has expanded its thermal management portfolio with the launch of the Cool Top 120-e, a fully electric rooftop air conditioning system designed for battery-electric light commercial vehicles.

The system is intended for vehicles equipped with a 400-volt DC electrical architecture, including minibuses, vans and ambulances. According to Webasto, the new unit delivers up to 12 kW of cooling capacity and operates within a voltage range of 250 to 460 volts DC.

The Cool Top 120-e measures 1.61 × 1.2 × 0.30 metres and weighs around 80 kilograms. It uses the refrigerant R1234yf, which the company says has a comparatively low global warming potential. The refrigerant is pre-filled when the system is delivered.

The roof-mounted unit is designed to provide cooling both while driving and when the vehicle is stationary. “Once the target temperature is reached, the compressor’s variable speed control automatically adjusts the output to match the cooling demand,” the supplier said, noting that this allows the system to run at partial load for quieter operation. The unit also offers a fresh-air function to improve cabin comfort.

Webasto states that installation has been simplified through a plug-and-play design. The system can be integrated into vehicle electronics via CAN bus, or alternatively operated using an optional Webasto control unit. The exterior housing can be painted to match the vehicle colour, while air outlets and ducts can be customised depending on the application.

According to the supplier, the Cool Top 120-e is available immediately through specialist dealers, with a recommended net retail price of €7,059.
