Volvo Trucks has expanded its medium-duty battery-electric truck offering with a new entry-level version of the Volvo FL Electric, featuring a 14-tonne gross combination weight (GCW) and a specific new battery configuration.
The new variant is explicitly designed for inner-city operations, emphasizing agility and maximum payload capacity for door-to-door deliveries in tight urban environments. The new configuration will feature $145$ kWh of usable battery energy, providing an electric range of up to approximately $200$ km, depending on operational factors.

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, explained the strategic reasoning behind offering lower-capacity options. “This is a perfect inner-city workhorse with no tailpipe emissions. We are always there to help our customers find the best electric truck for their business. You should only buy as much battery capacity as you need for the task to maximize the productivity in terms of payload capacity and profitability,” Hjelmgren said.
The new $14$-tonne model offers an electric motor delivering $180$ kW and is available in various wheelbases and axle configurations, allowing for customization. A key design feature is the placement of the batteries, which ensures they do not interfere with external body installations on the frame. The vehicle’s possibility of a width down to $2.4$ meters also enhances its agility for city use.

The new battery technology is being rolled out across several of Volvo’s electric truck models, ranging from the new $14$-tonne FL Electric up to the Volvo FE Electric versions with a GCW of up to $26$ tonnes. DC fast charging from $20$ per cent to $80$ per cent state of charge is estimated to take around $1.28$ hours with eight battery units in the new configuration.
Volvo, which has been producing the FL and FE electric models since 2019 and has sold more than $5,000$ electric trucks globally, plans to begin production of the new $14$-tonne Volvo FL Electric in the second half of 2026.
