Volvo Bus Australia has delivered 22 battery-electric buses to Transport for NSW, with most of the vehicles scheduled to enter service in Western Sydney from July as part of new airport-linked routes.

The buses are included in the state’s New Bus Services for Western Sydney programme and contribute to the broader Zero Emission Buses Program, which aims to deploy around 1,700 electric buses across Sydney by 2028. The vehicles are built on Volvo’s BZL Electric chassis and were bodied locally by Volgren.

Under the latest rollout, 18 buses will operate across five new permanent routes connecting key areas—including Penrith, Liverpool and Campbelltown—to the new Western Sydney airport. The remaining four buses have already been integrated into existing routes.

The BZL Electric platform, introduced in 2021, is designed for urban operations and supports configurations with three to five battery packs using NCA cells, offering total capacities of 282 kWh, 376 kWh or 470 kWh. The system is engineered for both single- and double-decker applications and features a fully integrated electric powertrain developed by Volvo.

Mitchell Peden said the delivery marks a step forward in the region’s electrification efforts. “We are excited to deliver these electric buses to Transport for NSW,” he said, adding that Volvo employs more than 1,400 people in Australia, including over 400 in New South Wales.

Alongside the deployment, Volvo has expanded workforce training initiatives in partnership with TAFE NSW, introducing specialised safety courses for handling high-voltage electric bus systems.

Peden added: “Volvo is proud to support the NSW government’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.”
