Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has offered a sneak peek into their latest innovation: the plug-in hybrid California concept camper. Set to make its grand debut at the upcoming Caravan Salon show in Düsseldorf, Germany on August 25, this new concept marks a significant step towards eco-friendly and innovative camping solutions. The anticipated production version is slated to hit the market in 2024, catering to enthusiasts of both cutting-edge technology and outdoor adventures.
Based on the elongated variant of the Multivan, the California concept leverages this platform as its foundation. Noteworthy features include a pop-up roof, which provides an additional 6.5 feet (approximately two meters) of height once deployed. The teaser imagery also showcases an extending awning on both sides, enhancing the outdoor living experience.

Intriguingly, a second teaser image grants a glimpse into the camper’s interior, revealing a sleek control panel. This interface grants users command over the thermostat, lighting, and cooling box, underscoring the integration of modern conveniences into the camping experience.
Powering this innovative camper is Volkswagen’s eHybrid PHEV powertrain, which comprises a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The combined output amounts to an impressive 215 horsepower (160 kilowatts). The heart of this powertrain is a 10.4-kilowatt-hour battery, providing an electric range of up to 30 miles. However, it remains uncertain whether this particular powertrain will find its way into the new California model.
During the division’s annual press conference in March, VW Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra shared insights into the brand’s vision. He stated, “We want to expand the range around the business with our camping models – and thus offer our customers that special California feeling.” This expansion encompasses not only the vehicle itself but also includes a range of digital services tailored for the Cali Community. Additionally, novel services are set to complement the vehicle purchase experience.

Volkswagen’s ambitions extend beyond the plug-in hybrid concept, as they are also poised to introduce a California variant of the highly anticipated ID. Buzz. Expected to roll out in 2025, this electric camper is projected to offer a blend of contemporary design and classic motorhome features, such as a cozy sleeping area and a compact kitchen. While official specifications are still under wraps, aftermarket companies in Europe are also actively developing similar offerings.
For those on the other side of the Atlantic, the ID. Buzz is scheduled to arrive in the United States in 2024. Notably, the U.S. version boasts an elongated wheelbase compared to its European counterpart. The passenger configuration can accommodate up to seven individuals, with variations catering to five and six occupants as well.
Power options for the ID. Buzz include two battery variants: one with an 82-kilowatt-hour capacity (77 kWh usable) and another with a 91-kilowatt-hour capacity (85 kWh usable). The standard powertrain delivers 282 horsepower and an impressive 413 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking enhanced performance, the GTX grade introduces all-wheel drive and a robust 335 horsepower.
