Volkswagen has introduced the California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion, a plug-in hybrid camper van set to launch in 2025, combining the model’s classic design elements with electrified powertrain technology and all-wheel drive.
According to Auto Zeitung, the California’s hybrid system pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 177 hp (130 kW) with an electric motor on each axle, delivering a combined output of 245 hp (180 kW) and 350 Nm of torque.
The setup provides an estimated electric-only range of up to 59 miles (95 km), though real-world range is closer to 50 miles (80 km). A six-speed dual-clutch transmission completes the drivetrain package. The vehicle weighs around 2,567 kg and measures 5.17 meters in length.
Inside, the camper retains traditional features such as a pop-up roof, extendable table, and compact kitchenette with a gas stove and sink. Sleeping space is provided by a lower bed measuring 1.06 meters wide and an upper bed at 1.14 meters.
Updates include app-based control of the roof and onboard technology, auxiliary air conditioning, and increased storage capacity. Two sliding doors enhance access and flexibility.
While the model’s payload is reduced to 383 kg compared to 634 kg for the diesel variant, Volkswagen is positioning the hybrid primarily for customers seeking sustainable travel solutions.
With its blend of camper flair and plug-in hybrid technology, the California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion offers a more environmentally conscious option, though its payload and range remain limiting factors for longer journeys.
