Volkswagen plans to launch the ID. UNYX 09 electric sedan in China during the second half of 2026, marking the second vehicle jointly developed with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng under the companies’ strategic partnership.
The confirmation came from Robert Cisek, chief executive officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand China, after the model appeared in China’s latest vehicle approval catalog, a key regulatory step before commercial sales.
Second Model From Volkswagen-Xpeng Partnership
In a post on Weibo, Cisek said the ID. UNYX 09 is the second vehicle jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng within 24 months.
He said the model features full-scenario intelligent driver assistance based on a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) large model together with an AI-powered in-car assistant.
“The ID. UNYX 09 is another new member of the ID. UNYX family and the second model jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng within 24 months.”
Cisek added that the company’s new energy vehicle portfolio in China continues to expand rapidly.
“Volkswagen’s new energy vehicle product matrix in China is continuing to expand at ‘China speed,’ bringing users more choices.”
The ID. UNYX 09 was included in the latest vehicle filing published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, completing one of the final regulatory requirements before entering the Chinese market.
Large Electric Sedan With AI Features
According to regulatory filings, the five-seat electric sedan measures 5,081 millimeters in length, 1,980 millimeters in width and 1,509 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 millimeters.
The model will be available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
The rear-wheel-drive version uses a single electric motor producing 230 kilowatts, while the all-wheel-drive variant combines a 140-kilowatt front motor with a 230-kilowatt rear motor for a combined output of 370 kilowatts.
Both versions have a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour and use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells supplied by CATL.
Volkswagen describes the ID. UNYX 09 as a B-segment electric coupe sedan, although its dimensions are larger than those typically associated with the segment in China.
The ID. UNYX 09 follows the launch of the ID. UNYX 08 electric SUV, which entered the Chinese market in April. That model incorporates Xpeng’s VLA 2.0 intelligent driving platform and dual Turing AI chips providing a combined 1,500 TOPS of computing performance.
Volkswagen and Xpeng established their strategic partnership in 2023, when the German automaker invested $700 million in the Chinese EV company to jointly develop Volkswagen-branded electric vehicles tailored for the Chinese market.
