Volkswagen on Wednesday (30/11/2022) announced that it was temporarily suspending vehicle production at two of its facilities located in China due to the Covid-19 related lockdown.
Quoted from Carscoops, a VW spokesperson confirmed that production at the Chengdu plant had been halted due to difficulties getting parts from suppliers who had to cut production due to the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, the production stoppage in Chengdu also affected the Jetta brand.
In addition, VW was also forced to stop two of its five production lines at the Changchun factory due to a shortage of spare parts. The move will impact production of the Audi A4, A6, Q5 and e-tron models made for the China market.
On the other hand, the company is keen to restart production at its Chengdu and Changchun sites as soon as possible.
“The possibility of resuming production at the stated location is being reviewed on an ongoing basis,” a VW spokesperson told Automobilwoche.
As is known, the production halt carried out by the automotive company occurred amid unprecedented civil unrest across China, which was triggered by frustration over the government’s ongoing zero-Covid policy.
On the other hand, Honda was forced to stop production at its factory in Wuhan due to movement restrictions throughout the city.
The Japanese automaker also extended a suspension of operations at a plant in Chongqing that produces engines for lawn mowers.
