Vietnamese automaker VinFast has launched two electric sport-utility vehicles in India as part of its global expansion, offering introductory prices aimed at undercutting rivals Tesla and BYD in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.

The VF6 compact SUV is priced at 1.51 million rupees ($18,127) and the larger VF7 mid-size SUV starts at 1.89 million rupees ($22,659).

The introductory pricing applies to the first 1,500 buyers or until Nov. 30, 2025, whichever comes first. Tesla’s Model Y retails for about $68,000 in India, while BYD’s ATTO 3 starts at around $28,400.

VinFast, Vietnam’s largest carmaker and an EV-only manufacturer, began operations at its new plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, in July after investing $500 million.

The facility, its first outside Vietnam, has an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, with plans to expand production to 150,000 units. Locally assembling EVs allows the company to avoid India’s 70% import duty on fully built cars, keeping prices significantly lower.

The company opened its first showroom in India in July and aims to establish 35 dealerships across 27 cities by the end of 2025. VinFast’s entry into India marks a bid to gain ground in a market where established players and new entrants are racing to capture demand for affordable EVs.
