The Vienna Chamber of Commerce has rolled out the ambitious “Zero Emission Transport” pilot project, aiming to test emission-free commercial transport in two districts of Vienna over the next three years. The initiative, which has kicked off with 32 participating companies, marks a significant step towards reducing carbon footprints in urban delivery traffic.
Participating companies have pledged to conduct their operations in Vienna’s first and second districts without tailpipe emissions. While some companies already operate emission-free, others are working towards achieving emission-free status for their entire fleet by the end of the pilot project.
Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “The flexible and innovative companies in Vienna will be able to make use of opportunities offered by the green economy. And the business community also wants to contribute to Vienna’s climate neutrality. Commercial transport is an important component of this.”
The project includes support from energy supplier Wien Energie, which is offering to install charging points in the participants’ chosen charging zones, facilitating clean energy usage for the vehicles. The Chamber of Commerce hopes this initiative, combined with the exemplary actions of the participants, will encourage more companies to join the “Zero Emission Transport” movement.
Scientific support for the project comes from the University of Applied Sciences of the BFI Vienna, which aims to identify challenges and optimization potential, benefiting the participating companies. The data gathered from this pilot project will serve as the foundation for further developing climate-neutral commercial transport in Vienna.
Peter Umundum, Director of Parcel & Logistics at Austrian Post AG, expressed support for the initiative, saying, “That’s why we are supporting the important Zero Emission Transport initiative and continuing to drive forward green logistics in Vienna as well. By the end of 2024, we want to convert our delivery fleet in the first and second districts so that we can deliver all parcels, letters, print media and direct mail items on the last mile CO2-free. By the end of 2025, we will even deliver CO2-free throughout Vienna.”
