Vattenfall InCharge and WirelessCar have completed a pilot of an automated electric vehicle charging service that eliminates the need for charging cards and mobile apps, with more than 700 drivers in Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany participating in the trial.

The cloud-based service, called Seamless Charging, is scheduled for a wider rollout across the InCharge network beginning in autumn 2026.

Automated Charging Experience

Seamless Charging connects compatible vehicles directly with charging stations, allowing charging sessions to begin automatically when a vehicle is plugged in and end when charging is complete.

The platform also handles authentication and payment without requiring drivers to scan a card or open a mobile application.

The system uses established industry-standard communication protocols to securely exchange information between the vehicle and charging infrastructure.

Currently, the service supports compatible Volvo and Tesla electric vehicles.

Simple Registration Process

Drivers activate the service through their My InCharge account by registering their vehicle and authorizing secure vehicle data sharing via the manufacturer’s authentication system.

Once registration is complete, future charging sessions are initiated automatically whenever the vehicle is connected to a participating charger.

The service is compatible with both AC and DC charging stations.

Improving the Public Charging Experience

Vattenfall InCharge, which operates more than 40,000 charging points, partnered with WirelessCar to simplify public charging by removing many of the manual steps currently required across different charging networks.

“Today, EV drivers often need different apps, cards and authentication steps depending on the charging network. So improving the customer experience and creating a simple charging journey is crucial for the transition to electric mobility. We wanted to explore whether we could remove some of these steps and make charging as easy as possible,” said Fanny Lindberg, Commercial Director at Vattenfall E-Mobility.

WirelessCar said the project demonstrates how connected vehicle technology can simplify the charging process.

“Our experience connecting vehicles, data, and ecosystem partners has shown that the best technology often removes complexity rather than adding it,” said Mateo Sotomayor, Vice President of EV Experience at WirelessCar.

“Improving the charging experience requires orchestration across a complex ecosystem of vehicles, platforms, charging networks, and service providers. Seamless Charging is a practical example—using connected vehicle technology to remove steps from the charging process.”

Wider Rollout Planned

The service is currently available only at selected pilot locations.

Vattenfall InCharge plans to expand Seamless Charging across its charging network during the autumn and winter deployment phases, with broader customer availability expected to begin in autumn 2026.
