A Maryland-based Acura dealership has filed a lawsuit against American Honda Motor Co., alleging that the automaker failed to provide adequate support after a new 2024 Acura ZDX electric SUV became inoperable just 400 miles into ownership. The case underscores potential risks for dealers as electric vehicles grow more complex and support frameworks evolve.
According to the lawsuit filed by Criswell Acura of Annapolis, the dealership purchased the ZDX at wholesale for $69,207 in May 2024 and sold it to a retail customer shortly after. But less than 500 miles later, the vehicle could no longer fully charge. As per Acura’s guidance, the dealership ordered a new battery pack, but the issue worsened — the vehicle eventually became completely non-functional, with even the doors ceasing to operate.

The dealership replaced the battery pack, only to encounter new problems. A malfunctioning rear wheel sensor and an unresolved error code led technicians to install a replacement wiring harness. However, the vehicle remained undriveable despite following Acura’s technical instructions. “Requests for assistance from Honda have been virtually ignored,” the lawsuit claims, as cited by Automotive News.
In the filing, Criswell Acura said the ongoing issues could be due to a “bad design, manufacturer’s defect, installation, or pre-delivery damage.” The vehicle has reportedly sat idle at the dealership for nearly eight months. “It is completely undriveable and unable to be repaired,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit seeks damages for breach of contract and unjust enrichment, citing losses from the initial sale, licensing and registration fees, as well as significant repair expenses. Under its dealer agreement, Honda is required to address manufacturing defects, a responsibility the lawsuit contends has not been fulfilled.
The legal action draws attention to the challenges that can arise with first-generation EV models and the reliance dealers place on manufacturer support for warranty repairs.
