Toyota Motor Europe’s Chief Operating Officer, Matt Harrison, has shed light on the automaker’s timeline for transitioning to a fully electric vehicle (EV) lineup. While Toyota has long been recognized for its pioneering role in hybrid technology, it has lagged behind in the fully electric vehicle sector. However, with the appointment of new CEO Koji Sato, the company has ramped up its efforts in the EV space, making a series of recent announcements.

Toyota has acknowledged the importance of incorporating fully electric models into its portfolio, alongside its hybrid strategy that includes plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In line with this commitment, the company has unveiled plans to develop its own dedicated EV platform, scheduled to launch in 2026. This platform aligns with Toyota’s newly announced EV battery technology roadmap.

By 2027, Toyota aims to introduce two next-generation EV batteries: a performance version and a popularized version. These batteries are projected to increase driving range by 20% compared to the current battery used in the bZ4X, while also achieving a cost reduction of 20% to 40%.

Toyota’s decision to prioritize EV development comes in response to pressure from shareholders who demanded a clear timeline for the company’s transition to electric vehicles. Concerns were raised regarding the chairman, Akio Toyoda, and his handling of the transition.

During an interview at the Automotive News Europe Congress, Matt Harrison expressed the automaker’s opposition to the Euro 7 emissions standard proposed by the European Union (EU). The Euro 7 standard, part of the European Green Deal, aims to establish stricter regulations for vehicle emissions to achieve ultra-low emissions. However, Harrison expects the regulations to be adjusted to be more realistic, expressing dissatisfaction with the current proposal.

Toyota Europe anticipates a significant increase in its EV market share, projecting it to rise from 0% in 2022 to 15% in 2025 and 55% in 2030. Harrison emphasized that Toyota will be prepared to offer 100% battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for sale by 2035.

Regarding local production in Europe, Harrison stated that it would only be viable once the company reaches the appropriate scale. With a projected EV market share of 15% in 2025, Toyota does not anticipate reaching that scale in the near future. Consequently, the automaker currently has no plans to produce EV batteries in Europe. However, it remains a possibility for future consideration.

As Toyota accelerates its EV strategy, these developments highlight the company’s commitment to embracing electrification while maintaining its hybrid leadership. With a dedicated EV platform on the horizon and advancements in battery technology, Toyota is poised to play a significant role in the evolving landscape of electric mobility.
