Toyota Motor North America will add 220 jobs as it ramps up electric vehicle manufacturing, the automaker said.

Engineering work will be added to Toyota’s Production Engineering Division, which serves as an intermediary for design and manufacturing, the company said. The new hires will be part of Toyota’s efforts to find ways to make electric vehicle production more efficient.

“As we scale up our plans for additional electric products in North America, we must have the resources and talent to lead that transformation,” Toyota Senior Vice President Brian Krinock said in a statement. /4/2022).

The new jobs will be spread across Toyota plant sites in North America, the company said. Toyota said 117 of the new positions would be based in Kentucky. The Toyota Production Engineering Manufacturing Center, in Georgetown, Kentucky, is the headquarters for production engineering and currently houses nearly 800 engineers.

Last year, the Japanese automaker announced a new investment of US$5.1 billion in US manufacturing operations to support electrification efforts.`
