The Cybertruck, Tesla’s futuristic electric pickup, has sparked fervent anticipation among enthusiasts. However, for one owner, known as ‘Malinecentral’ on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, excitement turned to disappointment as their attempt to gauge interest in their truck led to unforeseen consequences.

Malinecentral shared their story on the forum, revealing that they had listed their Cybertruck for sale on various online platforms, setting a whimsical asking price of $242,069. To their surprise, Tesla’s Loss Prevention team intervened, flagging their account and subsequently blacklisting them from making future purchases from the automaker.

In a communication quoted by Malinecentral, Tesla’s message was clear: any future orders placed by them would be summarily cancelled, with no refund of the reservation or order fees. This action underscores Tesla’s commitment to enforcing its anti-flipping policy, which penalizes individuals who attempt to sell their Cybertrucks within the first 12 months of ownership with a hefty fine.

While the exact enforceability of this policy remains a topic of debate, recent developments suggest that Tesla is taking a firm stance against reselling. Despite the threat of penalties, some Cybertrucks have made their way back into the market, albeit with mixed success. A recent auction of a Cybertruck fetched $244,500, but not all resale attempts have been as lucrative.

Tesla’s efforts to dissuade flipping are further evidenced by the recent Mecum’s Glendale event in Arizona, where a new Cybertruck failed to meet its reserve price, despite bids reaching $200,000. This, coupled with Tesla’s strict enforcement actions, raises questions about the future resale market for Cybertrucks and the lengths to which Tesla will go to maintain control over the distribution of its vehicles.

Tesla has yet to respond to requests for comment on this specific case, but given its past responses to similar situations, a swift and decisive stance is to be expected. As Cybertruck deliveries approach, prospective owners may need to think twice before attempting to turn a quick profit on their highly coveted electric trucks.
