After months of speculation, it seems that Tesla is finally ready to offer a Model Y variant with the highly anticipated 4680 battery cells. The company hinted at this development recently when it added the Model Y Dual Motor AWD to its design studio in the United States.
At $49,990 before incentives, the Model Y AWD offers an impressive 279 miles of range per charge, a top speed of 135 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds. The vehicle qualifies for the federal tax credit, provided buyers are eligible for the program’s benefits.

Tesla’s 4680 cells have been a critical part of the company’s strategy to improve battery efficiency and reduce production costs. First unveiled at Tesla’s Battery Day in September 2020, the cells have more energy and are cheaper to produce than previous models. CEO Elon Musk has noted that the 4680 cells could be a game-changer for Tesla’s long-term goals.
The Model Y AWD’s inclusion in the design studio is a promising sign for the ramp-up of Tesla’s 4680 cells. While the cells were initially launched in the Model Y last year, the vehicle was only available in limited quantities, primarily to Tesla employees. However, the Model Y AWD is now available for purchase by the general public.
Although Tesla did not explain why the 4680 Model Y was not added to the design studio earlier, some speculate that it was due to the challenges involved in ramping up production at Gigafactory Texas and the pilot line at Kato Road.
Interestingly, the Model Y AWD’s price has been lowered by $2,000 to $49,990 before incentives, making it even more appealing to potential buyers.

As Tesla continues to expand its lineup and production capabilities, it’s clear that the company’s focus on innovation and efficiency is paying off. With the 4680 cells now in use in the Model Y AWD, Tesla is well on its way to achieving its long-term goals and solidifying its position as a leader in the EV industry.
