Giga Shanghai, Tesla’s factory in China, has reached a remarkable milestone by producing its 1 millionth Model Y vehicle this week. What sets this accomplishment apart is the fact that it has been achieved in just over two years since the factory began manufacturing the Model Y. The production of the electric SUV commenced in late 2020, and the first deliveries took place in January 2021.
Although Tesla has yet to make an official announcement regarding this achievement, a photo circulating on social media showcases the jubilant Giga Shanghai employees celebrating the moment alongside the completion of the 1 millionth Model Y, finished in the striking Multi-Coat Red color.
Giga Shanghai has played a pivotal role in Tesla’s exponential growth over the past few years. Even before its inauguration, the factory impressed by transforming from a muddy construction site into a production-ready facility in less than a year. Its rapid progress continued, establishing it as the world’s most productive electric vehicle (EV) factory. Moreover, it became Tesla’s official export hub, contributing significantly to the company’s global sales.

Despite being less than four years old, Giga Shanghai has undergone numerous upgrades and currently boasts an impressive annualized production rate of over 1 million cars, encompassing both the Model 3 and Model Y.
The latest production update for Giga Shanghai was provided nearly a year ago in August 2022 when CEO Elon Musk announced that the factory had manufactured its 1 millionth vehicle overall. Although Musk did not break down the figures between Model 3 and Model Y production, he did highlight that Tesla had produced over 3 million cars worldwide since its inception.
With a total of four operational vehicle factories worldwide, Tesla achieved the milestone of over 4 million units produced earlier this year. Notably, the 4 millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line at Tesla’s newest factory, Giga Texas.
