Tesla has announced a significant reduction in the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription, cutting it from $199 to $99 per month, a move aimed at making the advanced driver-assistance feature more accessible to customers.

The Full Self-Driving suite, priced at $12,000 for outright purchase, includes AI functionality for Basic Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, Autosteer on City Streets, and Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control. These features are also available through the subscription program, allowing users to experience the capabilities of the FSD suite without committing to the full purchase price.

Tesla introduced the Full Self-Driving subscription in July 2021, initially priced at $199 per month. Additionally, Tesla offered a $99-a-month option for vehicles equipped with Enhanced Autopilot.

The decision to lower the subscription price came shortly after Tesla CEO Elon Musk liked a post on social media suggesting that reducing the price to $99 per month would increase the adoption rate of the FSD feature.

Despite the push for the subscription service, Musk has maintained that purchasing the Full Self-Driving suite outright is the more sensible option. He emphasized that while the FSD suite continues to improve and become more reliable with every mile driven, it is not fully autonomous and still requires human attention.

Tesla’s FSD users have collectively accumulated over one billion miles of data, contributing to the suite’s development and improvement. The technology relies on a neural network and is expected to advance further as more data is collected and analyzed.

The reduction in the subscription price reflects Tesla’s strategy to expand the adoption of its Full Self-Driving technology while emphasizing the importance of human supervision and caution when using the feature.
