Tesla on Wednesday celebrated the 15-year anniversary of its Fremont manufacturing facility in California, a plant that has played a defining role in the automaker’s rise as the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) producer.

The Fremont site, once home to the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) joint venture between General Motors and Toyota, was acquired by Tesla in 2010 and transformed into a hub for electric innovation. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most productive EV factories globally, with more than 3 million vehicles built since operations began.

According to Tesla, the plant surpassed the three-million milestone by May 2024 and achieved a record output of nearly 560,000 vehicles in 2023. As of October 2024, the Fremont facility had also produced over 1 million Model Y units — a significant achievement for Tesla’s best-selling model.

Tesla’s latest quarterly report estimates the factory’s installed annual capacity at over 650,000 vehicles, including approximately 550,000 for the Model 3 and Model Y and around 100,000 for the Model S and Model X. The Fremont site remains the company’s only facility that produces all four of these flagship models under one roof.

Beyond vehicle production, the plant’s economic impact on California has been substantial. The Fremont factory now employs more than 20,000 workers, making Tesla one of the state’s largest manufacturing employers. The company has also invested billions of dollars in plant expansions, automation upgrades, and sustainability improvements over the years.

When Tesla took over the site in 2010, it marked a symbolic shift in American manufacturing — from internal-combustion engines to electric propulsion. Since the start of Model S production in 2012, followed by the mass-market Model 3 and the highly popular Model Y, Fremont has remained at the heart of Tesla’s EV production network in North America.

With more than 3 million EVs built to date, Tesla’s Fremont factory stands as both a historic and operational cornerstone of the company’s global expansion — a reminder of how a once-shuttered auto plant helped spark an electric revolution that continues to accelerate.
