Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory reached a one-year high in vehicle exports in April, shipping close to 30,000 units, the company’s strongest monthly performance since early 2024. The increase was largely driven by international demand for the refreshed Model Y, which made its global debut in China earlier this year.
The updated Model Y is now being exported to several markets, including Australia and South Korea, contributing to record order volumes across the Asia-Pacific region. In South Korea, demand was particularly robust, with Tesla’s local website temporarily crashing on the day of launch and customers lining up at showrooms to place orders, according to a report by Chinese state media outlet Xinhua.
Tesla began delivering China-made vehicles in South Korea in late 2023. Since then, the brand has seen rapid expansion, with vehicle registrations in the country growing by 80% year-over-year by the end of 2024.
In addition to the export surge, Tesla reported strong domestic sales in mainland China. Between January and March 2025, the company sold 137,200 vehicles, an increase from 132,800 units during the same period in 2024.
Giga Shanghai remains Tesla’s main export hub outside the United States and produced more than 172,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025. March alone saw over 78,800 units delivered, with the factory continuing to focus exclusively on the production of the Model 3 and Model Y.
