Tesla has expanded its Model Y lineup in Europe with the introduction of a new rear-wheel-drive variant that combines reduced equipment with a larger battery, giving it the longest driving range of any Model Y currently on sale.

The new Model Y Standard Long Range RWD has appeared in Tesla’s German and Dutch online configurators at a price of €46,990, following the launch of a stripped-down entry-level Model Y priced at €39,990 in Germany last October. The new variant is not currently available in the UK.

According to Tesla’s specifications, the Standard Long Range RWD achieves a WLTP-rated range of 657 kilometres, compared with 454 kilometres for the entry-level version. This exceeds the range of all other Model Y variants sold in Europe, including the former Premium Long Range RWD, which offered up to 622 kilometres. Tesla’s website also indicates that the new version is slightly lighter and more energy-efficient than the lower-priced base model.

The efficiency gains are reflected in a WLTP-rated energy consumption of 12.7 kWh per 100 kilometres, compared with 13.1 kWh per 100 kilometres for the Standard version introduced in October. The vehicle uses Tesla’s familiar 220 kW rear-wheel-drive powertrain and supports charging power of up to 250 kW.

Tesla has repositioned its European Model Y lineup following the introduction of the Standard versions. In Germany, the reduced-equipment models are around €10,000 and €3,000 cheaper, respectively, than the previous base version, which has been renamed “Premium Rear-Wheel Drive.” The cost savings come with trade-offs, including the removal of certain comfort features, aesthetic elements such as the front light bar introduced with the recent “Juniper” facelift, and some technical changes, including lower acceleration.

All Model Y vehicles sold in Europe, including the new variant, are produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Grünheide, near Berlin. Production of the Standard Long Range RWD appears to be underway, with first customer deliveries in local markets expected as early as February.

While the new variant is not listed in the UK, Tesla recently launched the Model Y Standard there at £41,990. The company has also announced the availability of the Model 3 Standard in the UK and the Middle East, suggesting the Model Y Standard Long Range RWD could be introduced to additional markets at a later stage.

Tesla’s German press office describes the latest addition to the Model Y lineup as a guarantee for “relaxed travel at minimal costs,” highlighting the company’s focus on improving affordability for its highest-volume models. The move comes after Tesla last year dropped plans for a long-promised $25,000 model, once touted by Chief Executive Elon Musk as a key step toward mass-market adoption.
