Alfa Romeo’s ambitious plan to launch the next-generation Giulia as an all-electric model could see a shift, as Stellantis’ European chief, Jean-Philippe Imparato, hinted at maintaining internal combustion engine (ICE) options.
Imparato, who recently transitioned from leading Alfa Romeo to overseeing Stellantis’ European operations, indicated that the brand might adopt a multi-fuel strategy for the Giulia, depending on market conditions.
While Alfa Romeo had previously committed to electrifying its lineup by 2027, Imparato told Auto Express that his successor at Alfa, Santo Ficili, would have the flexibility to adjust plans if necessary. “If the current global ecosystem does not change, [Giulia] will be 100 percent electric. If I see it is changing, or that I’m not matching what I want, it is not a problem to adjust with alternative powertrains,” Imparato said.
The future Giulia, along with the Stelvio SUV, will be built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, supporting both electric and combustion powertrains.
Electric models are expected to offer battery packs ranging from 85 kWh to 118 kWh, and ultra-fast charging that could add 20 miles of range per minute. Despite potential shifts in its powertrain strategy, Alfa Romeo aims to retain the Giulia’s core focus on driver engagement and performance.
