SSA Marine has completed the full electrification of its forklift fleet at Berth 55 at the Port of Los Angeles, marking a significant step toward clean energy operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports.
The global terminal operator has replaced all 44 propane-powered forklifts with electric models, making Berth 55 the company’s first terminal to operate entirely on zero-emissions cargo handling equipment.
The terminal specializes in imported fruit from South America and has been operated by SSA Marine since the 1980s. The transition includes 12 heavy-duty 10,000-pound Hyster forklifts and 32 smaller 3,000-pound units.
According to the company, the move is expected to eliminate approximately 44,000 gallons of propane use per year and reduce tailpipe carbon emissions by about 264 metric tons annually.
The three-year electrification project was carried out in collaboration with the Port of Los Angeles and other partners. Port officials view the initiative as a model for broader emissions reduction goals.
The Port of LA has set a target to transition all yard equipment to zero emissions by 2030. With this project completed ahead of schedule, the terminal operator’s progress offers a roadmap for similar upgrades across the port.
