Smart has unveiled the new Smart #2 at the Paris Motor Show, introducing an electric two-seater designed for urban driving. The model revives the compact format associated with the original Smart Fortwo and is scheduled to enter the market in 2027, with a starting price of €19,999 in Europe.
The Smart #2 measures approximately 2.79 metres in length and has a turning circle of 6.95 metres. It features two doors, two seats and wheels positioned near the corners of the body. Its reported kerb weight is around 1,130 kilograms.
35.7 kWh Battery and 300 km Range
The electric two-seater uses a 60 kW motor mounted on the rear axle, supplied by InfiMotion. Chinese homologation documents released earlier indicated a top speed of 140 km/h.
Energy comes from a 35.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery using cells supplied by CATL, with the battery pack assembled by Geely. Smart estimates a driving range of approximately 300 kilometres under the WLTP cycle, although final homologation figures have yet to be confirmed.
The company says fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.
Smart Vice President Dr Tilo Schweers explained the company’s approach to charging speed ahead of the premiere:
“We don’t want to accelerate charging at the expense of battery lifespan,”
The #2 also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), allowing its traction battery to supply electricity to external devices.
New Platform Developed for Compact Electric Cars
The Smart #2 is built on the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a newly developed platform designed specifically for the micro-car segment.
Before the public unveiling, Smart tested the platform using prototypes that combined older Fortwo bodies with chassis equipped with the new architecture. The vehicles were used to evaluate driving dynamics, crash safety, battery performance, software and climate control.
The platform is intended to support the two-seater format as Smart expands its range beyond the larger five-seat models introduced in recent years.
Return to the Fortwo Concept
Smart’s current lineup includes the #1, #3 and #5, all larger five-seat vehicles. The original Fortwo was discontinued in spring 2024, before the company confirmed plans for a new electric two-seater in September 2025.
The new #2 returns to the compact concept that helped establish the brand in the 1990s. At the Paris unveiling, Johann Tomforde, who played a key role in the original MCC project, reflected on his continued interest in the vehicle concept.
“Since I left Smart in 1998, I have never stopped thinking about this car,” Tomforde said.
The design also connects the new model with the original project. Current Head of Design Kai Sieber previously studied under Tomforde, and Smart says suggestions from the former project leader influenced aspects of the new car’s design.
The company has also announced a Brabus variant and presented a limited Couture Edition planned for 2,000 units.
Production in China and European Pricing
Smart initially plans to manufacture the #2 in China and export it to Europe and other markets. Schweers said the decision was partly intended to avoid delaying the market launch by one to two years, which the company said could happen if production were based exclusively in Europe.
Smart has not ruled out European production in the future if demand reaches a level that justifies the investment.
For Europe, the model is expected to start at €19,999. Europe Chief Wolfgang Ufer positioned the vehicle as part of the company’s effort to broaden access to electric mobility.
“E-mobility must be available to more people,” Ufer said.
At approximately 2.79 metres long, the Smart #2 will target a relatively narrow segment of the electric-car market. Its final specifications, homologated range and market performance will help determine how it competes with larger electric vehicles that may offer more interior space at comparable prices.
