Smart has unveiled a significantly updated version of its #1 electric SUV in China, introducing an 800-volt electrical architecture, faster charging technology and a redesigned digital platform as it seeks to strengthen its position in the premium urban electric vehicle market.
The facelifted model will go on sale in China in early August and includes more than 200 updates covering design, technology and equipment. The company said the overhaul represents an important step in its global growth strategy, although it has not confirmed when the revised model will reach Europe.
New Platform Delivers Faster Charging
Developed through Smart’s joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, the updated #1 retains its existing design language while receiving several exterior revisions, including new Blue Gold and White Gold paint finishes, an updated rear spoiler and redesigned 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels.
The most significant changes are found beneath the bodywork.
Smart has equipped the vehicle with an 800-volt silicon carbide electrical architecture, replacing the previous system with one designed to improve charging performance and drivetrain efficiency.
The battery capacity has been reduced from 66 kWh to 61.52 kWh, but the introduction of 6C charging technology allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 12 minutes under optimal conditions.
The electric powertrain also features a new 16-in-1 drive unit that, according to Geely, delivers a CLTC system efficiency of 93.8%.
While Smart did not disclose an official power output, media reports suggest the updated model will produce between 245 kW and 250 kW, compared with 200 kW in the current version.
Digital Systems Receive Major Upgrade
The refreshed Smart #1 adopts the company’s new EEA4.0 electronic architecture, powered by a 4-nanometre processor running the Flyme Auto operating system.
The updated software manages the vehicle’s infotainment functions and advanced driver assistance systems, which rely on a suite of 31 sensors, including LiDAR.
According to Smart, the system supports features such as map-free Navigation on Smart Pilot (NSP) for both urban roads and highways, as well as automated parking functions across a wide range of driving scenarios.
The company has not announced a launch date for the updated #1 in Europe. Some of the advanced driver assistance features may require modification to comply with European regulations, although the new 800-volt architecture and faster charging capability are expected to appeal to customers in the region.
Smart is currently preparing for the global debut of the all-electric Smart #2 at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October. The compact model, positioned as the successor to the Fortwo, is expected to offer a driving range of around 300 kilometres, fast-charging capability and a tight turning circle designed for urban driving.
