Smart’s upcoming #2 two-seat electric city car has appeared in China’s latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) vehicle catalog, bringing the Mercedes-Benz and Geely Auto-backed brand’s smallest new EV closer to commercial launch.
The MIIT filing is a required regulatory step for new vehicles in China and typically precedes a market launch by several months. The listing identifies the Smart #2 as a battery-electric two-seat sedan manufactured by Geely’s Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing.
The model is expected to succeed the iconic Smart ForTwo and will be produced in China for domestic and overseas markets.
Compact Dimensions Target Urban Driving
According to the filing, the Smart #2 will be offered with two body lengths of 2,751 mm and 2,764 mm. Both versions measure 1,669 mm wide and 1,555 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 1,875 mm.
The vehicle has a curb weight of 1,130 kg and a top speed of 140 km/h.
Its compact dimensions are designed to preserve the city-focused characteristics that defined the original ForTwo, including a short footprint and a layout intended to make the vehicle easier to manoeuvre through congested urban streets.
The Smart #2 retains the brand’s distinctive “wheels-at-the-corners” design approach, which places the wheels close to the vehicle’s extremities to maximise manoeuvrability.
CATL Battery And 60-KW Motor
The Smart #2 uses a 60-kW electric motor supplied by Geely’s InfiMotion.
The vehicle is powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery using cells supplied by CATL, with the battery pack assembled by Geely’s Energee division.
The MIIT filing also lists several exterior configuration options. Buyers can choose between a black roof, a body-coloured roof and a hard-roof configuration, among other equipment variations.
The filing does not disclose the production vehicle’s final battery capacity or official driving range.
Global Launch Planned For Paris
Smart plans to sell the #2 in China, Europe and other international markets, with the vehicle expected to make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
The production model is based on the Smart Concept 2, which was unveiled in April ahead of the Beijing Auto Show.
The concept measured approximately 2.79 metres in length and featured a turning radius of 6.95 metres. Smart previously indicated that the concept could deliver an electric range of nearly 300 km.
The production car is being developed on Smart’s dedicated all-electric architecture for ultra-compact vehicles.
Smart Completes Global Validation
Smart said on July 20 that the #2 had entered global pre-production testing and validation.
The programme covers handling agility, driving stability, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), as well as safety performance.
The testing is intended to prepare the vehicle for production and eventual introduction across multiple markets.
The Smart brand was established in 1998. Mercedes-Benz and Geely formed a joint venture around Smart in January 2020, with the partnership headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.
The original Smart ForTwo established the brand’s two-seat city-car identity and has accumulated more than 2 million sales since its launch.
The Smart #2 is expected to carry that concept into the electric era, combining an ultra-compact footprint with a modern EV platform and a global sales strategy.
