Scania’s Electric Long-Haul Trucks Roll Off the Production Line

Scania, the Swedish automotive manufacturer, has initiated the series production of its electric trucks designed for regional transport in Södertälje, Sweden. First introduced in June 2022, these electric trucks, with a gross vehicle weight of up to 64 tonnes, have undergone significant enhancements, according to the recent announcement by Scania. The improvements include the incorporation of new electric drive systems with five power levels ranging from 270 kW to 400 kW, along with updated batteries featuring cells sourced from Northvolt. These batteries will be assembled into packs at Scania’s battery assembly plant in Södertälje, enabling these electric trucks to achieve ranges of up to 390 kilometers.

Scania describes this update as a “comprehensive update” for their new e-truck family, which made its debut in the summer of 2022. Key upgrades include the utilization of batteries equipped with Northvolt cells and the inclusion of electric motors available in five power levels: 270 kW, 300 kW, 330 kW, 360 kW, and 400 kW. Scania reports that these new batteries, assembled into packs at their Södertälje facility, offer a range of up to 390 kilometers and support charging speeds of up to 375 kW.

Scania’s latest electric trucks are suitable for a range of applications, with offerings as both trucks and tractors, featuring R-series or S-series cabs. The actual range varies based on factors such as weight, operating conditions, weather, and driving style. For instance, a 27-tonne city tipper equipped with six batteries can expect a range of up to 350 kilometers on a single charge. Moreover, a one-hour charge can add 270 kilometers of range, and even a 130 kW charger can provide an additional 100 kilometers of range in one hour, assuming a consumption rate of 1.3 kWh per kilometer.

Since opening orders in June 2022, Scania has built a robust order backlog, prompting the commencement of production in Södertälje, Sweden. These electric trucks, available with R and S cabs and power options of 400 kW or 450 kW, cater to a wide range of truck applications. Scania’s electric vehicle lineup, which includes updated urban battery electric vehicles, green battery packs, and services like Scania Charging Access, is now positioned as an attractive and relevant choice for diverse customer needs.

Notably, the new e-trucks feature the EM C1-4 e-motors with five power levels and four gears, providing customers with flexibility in configuring their vehicles. Scania aims to guide each customer to choose the optimal combination of battery capacity and power levels for their specific requirements.

Scania has chosen Northvolt as its battery cell supplier for these electric vehicles, emphasizing the lower carbon footprint of Northvolt cells compared to conventional industry cells. Furthermore, Scania highlights the charging characteristics of Northvolt cells, emphasizing their ability to be repeatedly charged up to 100% of the state of charge window without compromising battery lifespan. The straight charging curve ensures predictable charge times, contributing to a low total cost of ownership. While specific details about the battery pack’s energy content are not provided, Scania’s focus on battery efficiency and performance remains evident.
