China’s SAIC Motor has started deliveries of the MG4 “Anxin Edition,” marking the first time an affordable, mass-market electric car has been offered with a semi-solid-state battery, the company said.
The Anxin Edition is part of the new-generation MG Motor MG4, which was unveiled in March 2025, just three years after the original MG4 Electric entered the market. The accelerated model update reflects SAIC’s efforts to strengthen MG’s position in China, where the brand has seen more limited success than in Europe, while also positioning the new MG4 as the company’s first fully “global” model for China, other Asian markets and Europe.

Sales of the new MG4 began in China in late summer. At launch, MG introduced five variants instead of the four previously announced, with the fifth being the Anxin Edition. This version is equipped with a semi-solid-state battery supplied by QingTao Energy, a company in which SAIC invested several years ago.
Semi-solid-state batteries — sometimes described as an intermediate step toward fully solid-state technology — remain rare in mass production. They are designed to reduce the amount of liquid electrolyte compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries, offering potential gains in safety, charging performance and energy density. Until now, such batteries have mainly appeared in higher-end models, including limited production runs by Nio, supplied by battery maker WeLion.

With the MG4 Anxin Edition, MG becomes the first brand to introduce the technology in a compact, lower-priced electric vehicle. In China, the Anxin Edition is priced at around 100,000 yuan (€12,000), compared with roughly 70,000 yuan (€8,500) for MG4 variants using conventional lithium-ion batteries.
It remains unclear whether the Anxin Edition will be offered in Europe. The new MG4 EV is scheduled to launch there next year, but European pricing is expected to be significantly higher than in China due to logistics and import duties. The outgoing MG4 Electric currently starts at €34,990 in Germany.

According to technical specifications released by MG, the manganese-based semi-solid-state battery contains about 5% less liquid electrolyte than a standard lithium-ion battery and has a capacity of 53.95 kWh. Paired with a 120-kilowatt permanent magnet synchronous motor, the vehicle delivers a CLTC range of 530 kilometres and energy consumption of 11.9 kWh per 100 kilometres. Using 2C fast charging, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in about 21 minutes. Top speed is listed at 160 km/h.
The new-generation MG4 is also larger than its predecessor, measuring 4.40 metres in length, 1.84 metres in width and 1.55 metres in height, with a wheelbase of 2.75 metres.
