Rivian has unveiled new details of its upcoming Maximus drive unit, a next-generation electric motor system set to be deployed in the company’s forthcoming R2 model. The announcement, shared by founder and CEO RJ Scaringe on social media, marks a critical step in Rivian’s effort to optimize its supply chain and lower production costs amid an increasingly competitive EV landscape.
The new Maximus unit is expected to play a central role in Rivian’s electrification strategy as it transitions to building smaller and more affordable EVs. The drive unit, which has been under development for some time, will be manufactured at Rivian’s facility in Normal, Illinois, where the company has been scaling up production of its R1T pickup and R1S SUV models.

“This is the new Maximus drive unit configuration being implemented in R2,” Scaringe said in a post that accompanied a close-up image of the new system. While the teaser does not reveal much of the R2 vehicle itself, it underscores the company’s ongoing engineering push to simplify drivetrain components and improve manufacturing efficiency.
Among the notable design improvements in Maximus is a revised stator winding technique that significantly reduces welding requirements. Rivian previously disclosed that its earlier Enduro drive unit required 264 welds per stator. In contrast, Maximus requires just 24, thanks to a continuous winding process that streamlines production and cuts associated costs.

Further enhancements to the Maximus design include the integration of the front rotor shaft and gear into a single forged and CNC-milled component, as well as a reduction in the number of bearings needed. These changes result in a more compact and lighter drive unit, which the company says will positively impact both production efficiency and vehicle range.
The R2, expected to launch in 2026, is Rivian’s follow-up to the R1 series and will be targeted at a broader consumer market. The company has also announced plans for additional future models, including the smaller R3 and off-road inspired R3X, both of which will likely benefit from the innovations being piloted in the Maximus platform.

While Rivian saw a slight dip in deliveries last quarter, demand for its vehicles remains steady despite broader volatility in the EV market and ongoing challenges faced by legacy automakers transitioning to electric powertrains. The company continues to position itself as a key player in the American EV space through a combination of vertical integration, in-house technology development, and production scaling.
