Rivian Recalls 5,030 R1S SUVs Over Reversing Light Visibility Issue – Third Recall Notice in 2023

Rivian, the American EV manufacturer, has issued its third recall notice for the R1S electric SUVs in 2023. This time, the recall concerns 5,030 R1S vehicles that were manufactured between November 19, 2012, and March 21, 2023. The reversing lights of these vehicles may not be visible from certain angles and, as a result, do not meet the legal visibility requirements. This issue could potentially increase the risk of a collision.

According to the recall report posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Rivian will replace the non-compliant reversing lights free of charge with redesigned lamps that conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) visibility requirements. The automaker became aware of the issue on March 8, 2023, and ceased the use of affected components on March 21. The company will notify affected vehicle owners on or before May 20, 2023.

This recall follows the previous two recalls issued for the Rivian R1S in 2023, which were related to faulty airbag sensors and improperly fastened side airbags. Rivian has pledged to provide its customers with high-quality products and is committed to taking swift action when necessary to ensure their safety.

In light of this recall, Rivian has released the following statement:

“At Rivian, the safety of our customers is our top priority. We are committed to providing high-quality vehicles and continuously improving our manufacturing processes to prevent any issues from arising. We apologize for any inconvenience this recall may cause and encourage all affected R1S owners to bring their vehicles in for service as soon as possible.”

Rivian is a fast-growing EV manufacturer, having produced 24,337 electric vehicles and delivered 20,332 units to customers in 2022. In the first quarter of 2023, the company assembled 9,395 battery electric vehicles (BEV) at its factory in Normal, Illinois, representing a remarkable 200 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the recent recalls, Rivian’s commitment to producing high-quality EVs and meeting customer demand remains unwavering.
