Rivian has claimed the title of the best-selling electric van in the United States for 2024, surpassing Ford in this segment. The electric delivery van (EDV), which is being rolled out across the country through Rivian’s partnership with Amazon, saw significant growth, with over 51,500 electric vehicles delivered in 2024. This figure slightly exceeded the 50,122 units delivered in 2023, with a notable uptick in the second half of the year.

Despite challenges, including a temporary shutdown of its Normal, Illinois manufacturing plant in April for upgrades, and a production pause due to a part shortage last summer, Rivian managed to recover. The company reported in early January that the previously mentioned shortage of a shared component across its R1 and RCV platforms was no longer an issue, allowing for smoother production.

Rivian’s 13,423 EDVs sold in the US in 2024 marked a 67% increase from the previous year. This outpaced Ford, which sold 12,610 E-Transit vans during the same period. Rivian’s success in the fourth quarter was particularly notable, with nearly 4,400 EDVs sold compared to Ford’s 3,354 E-Transit sales. This achievement came even as Ford launched an updated version of the E-Transit in March with a larger battery and faster charging, followed by the 2025 model in October, priced to compete with gasoline Transit models starting at $51,000.

While Rivian has a commitment from Amazon for up to 100,000 EDVs, it is also expanding its commercial customer base. The company’s RCV vans have been spotted in use by logistics companies like DHL, signaling Rivian’s growing influence in the commercial electric vehicle market.

In addition to its electric vans, Rivian’s R1S electric SUV was ranked as the tenth best-selling electric vehicle in the US in 2024, further cementing the company’s presence in the electric vehicle market.
