Renault has opened UK order books for the Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’, a new version of its compact electric vehicle featuring an electrically operated canvas roof inspired by the original Renault 4.
The automaker said prices for the new variant begin at £27,445 on-the-road after application of the UK government’s £3,750 Electric Car Grant. First customer deliveries are scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
Renault said the retractable ‘Plein Sud’ roof draws inspiration from the fabric roof design used on the classic Renault 4 while adapting the concept for modern electric mobility.
The company described the model as “the only electric car in its segment that offers a fully opening roof.”
The canvas roof is available exclusively on the techno+ and iconic+ trim levels and adds £1,500 to the price compared with fixed-roof versions. Customers enrolled in Renault’s R Pass programme can place orders immediately, while general sales in the UK begin on May 14.
The electric roof system creates an opening measuring 80 by 92 centimetres and can be operated using a one-touch control switch or through voice commands via Renault’s Reno digital assistant. The roof folds into three sections and can also be positioned at intermediate opening points.
Renault said the multi-layer roof structure maintains insulation and sealing performance when closed, while interior headroom remains similar to that of the standard fixed-roof model.
The automaker added that cargo capacity has not been reduced despite the addition of the roof mechanism. Luggage volume remains at up to 1,350 litres with the rear seats folded, matching the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric. The vehicle also includes a low 60.7-centimetre loading sill and a wide-opening tailgate, while powered tailgate functionality comes standard on iconic+ versions.
Both available trim levels use the same electric drivetrain setup. The Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ is fitted with a 52-kWh lithium-ion NMC battery and a 110-kW electric motor producing 245 Nm of torque. Renault said the model delivers a WLTP driving range of up to 242 miles.
The launch of the new version also coincides with updates to the Renault 4 E-Tech electric’s safety systems to comply with the latest GSR2.3 regulations.
According to Renault, the vehicle now offers up to 28 advanced driver assistance systems, including a driver monitoring system using an A-pillar-mounted camera, emergency stop assistance and predictive eco-driving features based on navigation data.
The manufacturer has also expanded customisation options across the Renault 4 E-Tech electric range, adding new exterior graphics and six body colour choices. All versions of the model come equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard.
