Porsche and Audi Recall 2023 Electric Vehicles Over Fire Risk

Porsche and Audi, prominent Volkswagen premium brands, have initiated a recall for their 2023 electric vehicle (EV) models, including the Taycan and e-tron GT. The recall, affecting approximately 7,000 EVs, is prompted by concerns over inadequate battery sealant, which could potentially allow liquids to infiltrate the battery, posing a fire hazard. It’s important to note that no reported incidents of fires have occurred, but the automakers are taking preemptive measures to ensure safety.

The origin of this recall traces back to last year when both Porsche and Audi became aware of potential problems with insulation resistance values in select 2023 models. In some cases, the presence of liquid was detected within the battery.

Between March and August, the automakers received reports of compromised insulation resistance in electric models equipped with sealant from the supplier Teroson. In response to these concerns, Teroson introduced an enhanced sealant in May, and since its implementation, no further reports of liquid infiltration have surfaced.

In an abundance of caution, Porsche and Audi have opted to recall vehicles equipped with the original Teroson sealant. The impacted electric models include various versions of the 2023 Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT:

  • Porsche Taycan
  • Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan 4S
  • Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan GTS
  • Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo S
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo
  • Audi e-tron GT
  • Audi RS e-tron GT

To address the issue, Porsche and Audi dealerships will conduct tests on the affected vehicles to determine if any leakage has occurred into the battery. In cases where the test indicates a problem, the battery will be replaced at no cost to the owner.

This recall encompasses 1,899 Audi models and an additional 4,777 Porsche vehicles. Owners can expect to receive notification letters regarding the recall on October 31, 2023.

Audi owners can contact customer service at 1-800-253-2834, referencing recall number 93T7. Audi dealers were informed of the recall on September 7, while Porsche plans to notify its dealerships on September 15.

Owners concerned about their vehicles can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for additional guidance.
