Porsche has unveiled updates for the 2027 Taycan, introducing a new optional virtual gearbox system called E-Shift alongside a series of efficiency and infotainment improvements.
The refreshed electric sports car is now available to order, with one of the headline additions being a simulated gear-shifting experience designed to recreate the sensations of a traditional combustion-engine sports car.
Virtual Gearbox Arrives in the Taycan
The new E-Shift mode allows drivers to simulate gear changes using steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles.
The system features eight virtual gears, complete with artificial shift interruptions, a revised electric sports sound, and a digital rev counter intended to mimic the driving characteristics of a conventional performance vehicle.
Porsche includes E-Shift as standard on the flagship Taycan Turbo GT, while customers purchasing other variants can add the feature as an option for approximately €1,000.
The technology has generated significant attention as automakers continue exploring ways to recreate traditional driving sensations in electric vehicles.
Range Increased Through New Tyres
Beyond the virtual transmission, Porsche has focused on incremental efficiency improvements.
Single-motor entry-level Taycan variants can now be equipped with new low rolling-resistance summer tyres that increase driving range by up to 20 kilometres.
Combined with the optional Performance Battery Plus, the updated Taycan can now achieve up to 700 kilometres of WLTP range, marking a new milestone for the model.
Faster Infotainment System
Porsche has also upgraded the Taycan’s Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment platform.
According to the company, the system now delivers up to five times more computing power than before, resulting in quicker response times, smoother menu operation and improved overall system performance.
The upgraded voice assistant now supports a wider range of functions, including navigation, vehicle controls, media management and selected applications through the AI-supported Voice Pilot system.
Enhanced Digital Features
The updated Taycan also benefits from expanded over-the-air update capabilities, allowing owners to download additional infotainment features remotely.
Porsche has further improved smartphone charging functionality by increasing wireless charging output to 25 watts, enabling charging speeds up to 1.5 times faster than the previous system.
No Major Changes to Lineup or Pricing
Despite the updates, Porsche has not introduced major changes to the Taycan’s technical architecture, model lineup or pricing structure.
The vehicle remains available in saloon, Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo body styles, with a total of 18 variants.
Power outputs continue to range from 300 kW to 760 kW, while pricing remains between €102,600 and €241,100 depending on the model.
Focus on Driver Engagement
The introduction of E-Shift highlights Porsche’s continued emphasis on driver engagement as electric performance vehicles become increasingly common.
Rather than altering the Taycan’s underlying electric drivetrain, the system aims to provide a more emotional and interactive driving experience through simulated shifting, sound effects and power delivery characteristics.
With the 2027 update, Porsche is combining modest efficiency gains and technology upgrades with a feature designed to appeal to enthusiasts looking for a more traditional sports-car feel in an electric vehicle.
