Chinese autonomous driving company Pony.ai said the first mass-produced bZ4X Robotaxi developed with Toyota has rolled off the production line, marking a key step toward large-scale commercialization of autonomous ride-hailing services.
The rollout signals the transition of the Pony.ai–Toyota partnership from pilot operations to scaled manufacturing. The companies plan to produce more than 1,000 bZ4X Robotaxis in 2026, with vehicles to be gradually deployed into commercial service across China’s Tier 1 cities. The move supports Pony.ai’s broader goal of expanding its robotaxi fleet to more than 3,000 vehicles.

The bZ4X Robotaxi has been jointly developed by Pony.ai, Toyota Motor China and GAC Toyota, with production carried out in cooperation with GAC Toyota at one of Toyota’s global model plants. The partners said the project reflects close coordination across autonomous driving technology, vehicle manufacturing and supply chain integration.
The vehicle is equipped with Pony.ai’s latest seventh-generation autonomous driving system, which uses fully automotive-grade components. Pony.ai has said the new system significantly reduces the cost of the autonomous driving hardware compared with earlier generations, improving the economic viability of large-scale deployment.
The production line integrates the Toyota Production System, embedding quality control, safety management and process traceability into robotaxi manufacturing. The approach is intended to meet the reliability standards required for long-term autonomous operations in dense urban environments.

The milestone builds on a strategic collaboration that began in 2019, during which Pony.ai and Toyota have jointly advanced robotaxi design, manufacturing planning and operational support, including the establishment of a dedicated joint venture focused on autonomous vehicle development.
Pony.ai said its robotaxi fleet exceeded 1,100 vehicles by the end of 2025, surpassing its annual deployment target as rollout accelerated in the second half of the year. The company has also expanded partnerships with BAIC BJEV and ATBB as it moves toward broader commercial adoption of Level 4 autonomous driving technology.
