Autonomous driving startup Pony AI has announced plans to introduce an in-airport robotaxi commuting service for staff at Hong Kong International Airport, expanding its footprint in the autonomous vehicle sector.

The company aims to broaden its robotaxi service to downtown Hong Kong after initially rolling it out at the airport. The move follows the Airport Authority Hong Kong’s recent demonstration of several driverless vehicles, many of which are already or will soon be deployed at the airport. Pony AI’s sixth-generation robotaxi was part of the demonstration.

Pony AI emphasized that its entry into Hong Kong International Airport highlights the vehicle’s ability to operate autonomously in complex environments, adhering to the traffic rules of driving on the left. This follows the company’s ongoing fee-based robotaxi service at Beijing Daxing International Airport and self-driving tests on major roadways near Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

In the first half of 2024, Pony AI averaged over 15 orders per day per unmanned robotaxi, and the company continues to explore international markets, with operations already underway in South Korea, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Pony AI went public on Nasdaq on November 27, marking the largest IPO in the autonomous driving sector in 2024.
