Polestar has unveiled the innovative digital rearview mirror feature in its upcoming Polestar 4 crossover, offering drivers the option to switch between a traditional mirror and the new high-definition display. This announcement, made in a recent press release, showcases the integration of a rear-facing exterior camera and an HD rearview mirror display.

The design of the Polestar 4, resembling the Tesla Cybertruck, features a minimal rear windshield, prompting the need for a toggle option between the HD display and a traditional mirror. According to Polestar 4 Product Manager Ola Aldensjö, this decision was motivated by practical considerations rather than a mere gimmick.

Aldensjö highlighted two key benefits of this design choice. Firstly, the rear camera provides an improved line of sight, offering a clearer view of the vehicle’s surroundings even in challenging conditions such as low light or rain. Secondly, the absence of a rear window enhances the interior space, creating a more luxurious experience for passengers akin to a business class or executive lounge.

A video accompanying the press release features Polestar Head of Product Communications Brent Ellis explaining why the rearview camera display offers superior visibility compared to a traditional mirror. The video also demonstrates the wide field of view provided by the rear camera, emphasizing its effectiveness.

While the Tesla Cybertruck also features a digital rear display, it is positioned differently, appearing near the top of the touchscreen rather than on the windshield as in the Polestar 4.

This announcement follows recent developments involving Polestar, including Volvo’s decision to relinquish its shares in the automaker to Geely. Additionally, rental car company Hertz reportedly paused purchases from Polestar, and the automaker announced a workforce reduction of approximately 15% due to challenging market conditions.
