Hyundai Mobis has reached a final agreement to sell its automotive lighting business to French automotive components manufacturer OPmobility in a transaction valued at KRW 600 billion ($441 million) on an enterprise value basis.
The agreement covers 100% of Hyundai Mobis’ lighting business, which was being prepared for separation into a standalone company. The transaction is expected to strengthen OPmobility’s position in automotive lighting while allowing Hyundai Mobis to focus more closely on its broader future mobility solutions portfolio.
Hyundai Mobis Lighting Business Generates $1.8 Billion in Revenue
Hyundai Mobis’ lighting operation generates approximately KRW 2.5 trillion ($1.8 billion) in annual revenue and operates five manufacturing facilities across South Korea, China, Mexico and the Czech Republic.
Hyundai Mobis said the divestment represents an important step in its transformation toward becoming a future mobility solutions provider.
“The decision to sell the business marks a significant milestone in the company’s transformation into a future mobility solutions provider, while also helping enhance its corporate and shareholder value.”
The transaction will transfer the lighting business to OPmobility, which plans to combine it with its existing automotive lighting operations.
OPmobility Targets Larger Automotive Lighting Position
OPmobility, formerly known as Compagnie Plastic Omnium before adopting its current name in 2024, said the acquisition will increase the scale of its automotive lighting activities and support its diversification strategy.
The combination is expected to broaden OPmobility’s manufacturing and commercial footprint in key automotive markets while adding to its technical capabilities in vehicle lighting.
OPmobility CEO Félicie Burelle said the two businesses have complementary capabilities that can help create a larger automotive lighting supplier.
“The combination of Hyundai Mobis lighting business with our own lighting activity will enable us to reach a new scale and create a leading player in the automotive lighting market.”
Burelle said the deal would strengthen OPmobility’s presence in Asia, North America and Europe while expanding its expertise and ability to integrate exterior vehicle systems with lighting technologies.
Deal Expected to Close in 2027
The acquisition is expected to be completed during the second half of 2027, subject to customary antitrust and regulatory approvals.
For OPmobility, the transaction also deepens its relationship with Hyundai Motor Group and its brands Hyundai and Kia. The company said the deal supports its strategy of technological development, geographic expansion and customer diversification.
Burelle also said OPmobility looks forward to integrating employees from Hyundai Mobis’ lighting business following completion of the transaction.
The acquisition will give OPmobility a larger platform in automotive lighting while providing Hyundai Mobis with an opportunity to concentrate its resources on other components and future mobility technologies.
