Volkswagen is making significant strides in the shift to electric mobility, as evidenced by the 23.6% YoY increase in global deliveries of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) to around 330,000 units. Despite this growth, total deliveries of all drive types by the Volkswagen brand were slightly lower than the previous year due to supply constraints, with 4.56 million vehicles (-6.8%) delivered to customers worldwide in 2022. However, the demand for Volkswagen vehicles remains high, as reflected by the high order backlog. In Europe, orders for Volkswagen models across all drive types have risen 18% to around 640,000.
Volkswagen’s ID. electric models are gaining widespread popularity on global automotive markets. With around 170,000 units delivered in 2022, the ID.4 is the Volkswagen Group’s most popular electric car worldwide.
In China, the company’s largest market, Volkswagen more than doubled deliveries of the all-electric ID models from the ID. family, with 143,100 ID.3, ID.4, and ID.6 units delivered to customers there in 2022, a 102.9% increase.
Additionally, there was a significant boost in sales in North America, with a total of 22,700 ID.4 units delivered in the region, a 27.7% increase.
The ID.4 also performed particularly well in Sweden, with around 8,900 units delivered, making it the best-selling electric car in the country. This marks the third year in a row that an ID model has been the top-selling BEV car in Sweden (2020: ID.3, 2021: ID.4)
Volkswagen has made significant progress in its electric mobility initiative, reaching a major milestone by delivering over 580,000 models from the ID. family worldwide since the first ID.3 was handed over to a customer in September 2020. The ID. models are based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform. Recently, Volkswagen revealed the latest addition to the ID. family, a concealed ID.7 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The ID.7 is a sedan model that expands Volkswagen’s electric vehicle portfolio into the upper-middle class high-volume segment.
Despite a difficult market environment, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.56 million vehicles across all drive types to customers in 2022, a decrease of 6.8%. SUVs are the fastest-growing market segment, and Volkswagen has been quick to adapt its portfolio to this trend. The share of SUVs in total deliveries has risen to 45%, an increase of 4%. In the USA, over 80% of Volkswagen’s deliveries are in the SUV segment. In Europe, the T-Roc is the best-selling vehicle in the SUV market.
Volkswagen anticipates 2023 to be a challenging year due to continuing semiconductor supply shortages. Despite this, the company hopes to see a gradual improvement in the supply situation and stabilization of production as the year progresses. āWe are doing our utmost to reduce delivery times for our customers still further and to lower the high order backlog as quickly as possible,ā said Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales LabbĆ©.
