Octopus Energy has positioned itself as a leader in the renewable energy transition, leveraging cutting-edge technology to make clean energy more accessible and affordable. In a conversation with EVMagz, Nick Chaset, CEO of Octopus Energy US, shared insights on the company’s mission, smart EV charging innovations, and the challenges and opportunities ahead in the evolving energy landscape.

A Customer-Centric Approach to Renewable Energy

Octopus Energy operates on the belief that technology is the key driver of the energy transition. “When you put the customer first and surround them with best-in-class technology and great people, you can deliver renewable energy that is cheaper, more reliable, and accessible to everyone,” Chaset said. With operations spanning four continents and serving over 9 million households, the company has become a global leader in consumer-focused energy solutions.

Beyond retail energy supply, Octopus Energy’s Kraken platform supports over 60 million customers worldwide by enabling energy transition technologies for utilities and businesses. “Both of these companies will continue to scale customer-centric clean energy solutions and deliver them to an increasingly global customer base,” Chaset emphasized.

Expanding in the U.S. Market

Octopus Energy’s footprint in the United States continues to grow, particularly in Texas, where it serves as a retail electricity supplier offering 100% renewable energy. Outside of Texas, the company works closely with utilities, providing flexibility services through Kraken. “This integrates Octopus Energy’s globally leading customer-centric capabilities with Kraken technology to massively accelerate utilities’ ability to build portfolios of flexible load,” Chaset noted.

One of the company’s standout innovations is Intelligent Octopus, a smart EV charging solution designed to optimize charging schedules based on electricity prices, grid demand, and emissions levels. “Consumers get the lowest possible cost while ensuring that their vehicles are always fully charged when they need them,” he explained. The technology balances cost-effectiveness with sustainability, helping both consumers and utilities manage energy consumption more efficiently.

The Role of Smart Charging in Grid Stability

As EV adoption rises, grid stability becomes a pressing concern. Chaset highlighted how unmanaged charging could strain distribution networks, leading to increased costs for utilities. “However, if charging is thoughtfully orchestrated, it can bring down the cost of electricity by increasing utilization on the grid,” he said. He stressed the need for better public charging infrastructure, particularly for drivers without home charging access.

“The U.S. lacks sufficient affordable and accessible public charging, especially for non-Tesla EVs,” Chaset said, pointing to the need for innovative business models. He cited California’s approach, where community choice energy agencies fund public charging infrastructure while assuming the risk of network utilization, as a promising solution.

Overcoming EV Charging Challenges

One of the biggest hurdles in expanding EV charging infrastructure is the “chicken-and-the-egg” dilemma—whether to build charging stations before widespread EV adoption or wait for more EVs before investing in charging. “Our view is that the single biggest thing you can do is make all chargers easily accessible and visible to consumers,” Chaset said.

Octopus Energy’s Electroverse platform addresses this challenge by consolidating over 1 million charge points across Europe into a single app that simplifies payments and charging station access. “We’re bringing this solution to the U.S. to offer millions of EV drivers one seamless charging access and payment solution,” Chaset revealed.

The Future of Octopus Energy and Clean Energy Innovation

Looking ahead, Chaset expressed enthusiasm about Electroverse and its potential to improve the EV charging experience. “As someone who has driven an electric car for over 10 years, I know how difficult it is to find a reliable charging station, download yet another app, enter credit card details, and hope it works. Electroverse eliminates all of that,” he said.

Despite increasing competition in the renewable energy sector, Chaset believes Octopus Energy will continue to stand out. “We will always stand out because we put the customer first,” he stated.

On a personal level, Chaset is driven by the urgency of the energy transition. “The energy transition and addressing climate change are the challenges of our lifetime. As a parent of two young children, I see it as an imperative that we build a future they can thrive in,” he shared.
