Nissan Reveals New Photos and New Details of Next-Gen LEAF EV Ahead of Global Debut

Nissan has released new details and images of the third-generation LEAF, signaling a significant transformation of its iconic electric vehicle ahead of its official launch later this month.

The next-gen LEAF departs from its familiar hatchback silhouette in favor of a more aerodynamic, family-friendly crossover design. Built on the CMF-EV platform shared with the Ariya SUV, the new LEAF boasts a drag coefficient as low as 0.25 in Europe (0.26 for U.S. and Japan models), a notable improvement over the 0.28 Cd of the outgoing version.

“Every design choice was optimized for aero and energy efficiency, even the panoramic glass roof contributes to exceptional aerodynamics,” said Nobutaka Tase, program design director at Nissan.

All versions will include new features such as flush door handles, an active grille shutter, a redesigned fastback-style rear, and a flat underbody. Together, these changes support a more streamlined profile and improved efficiency.

Nissan has not officially confirmed the battery specifications but hinted at major range enhancements. François Bailly, senior vice president and chief planning officer, told TopGear.com the LEAF is expected to achieve up to 373 miles (600 km) on the WLTP cycle. This would likely translate to an EPA range closer to 300 miles — a substantial increase from the 212 miles offered by the current LEAF SV Plus.

The third-gen LEAF will also come with a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting U.S. drivers access to Tesla’s Supercharger network — a growing priority among EV makers seeking charging parity.
