Nio’s upcoming third-generation ES8 SUV will likely share the same 100-kWh battery pack as its ET9 sedan, potentially enhancing the vehicle’s driving range and market competitiveness, according to regulatory documents released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The new ES8 model, listed under the product number NAL6533BSEVE1, features a 102-kWh battery pack and has been added to the latest list of vehicles eligible for new energy vehicle (NEV) purchase tax exemptions. The battery enables a CLTC-rated range of 635 kilometers. With a curb weight of 2,630 kg and a battery pack weighing 545 kg, the vehicle achieves an energy density of 187 Wh/kg.
This development indicates that Nio could be moving away from the 75-kWh battery pack previously used in base versions of the ES8, instead adopting a longer-range option as standard. The change would mirror the strategy used in its sub-brand Onvo, where the flagship L90 SUV now features an 85-kWh pack as standard. If implemented, this shift could improve the ES8’s value proposition without raising its starting price of RMB 498,000 ($69,430).
Scheduled for launch at the company’s adjusted Nio Day event in the fourth quarter, the new ES8 will be available in six- and seven-seat configurations and feature increased dimensions compared to its predecessor. The MIIT filing also confirms the battery is a ternary lithium unit supplied by CATL
