Nio said on Thursday that its premium compact electric vehicle brand Firefly has made its overseas debut at the Singapore Motorshow 2026, marking the first right-hand drive model launched by the Chinese automaker as it steps up global expansion.
Pre-orders for the right-hand drive Firefly EV have opened in Singapore, making the city-state the first market to receive the model. Nio is partnering with local automotive retailer Wearnes Automotive, founded in 1906, which represents and retails several premium and luxury vehicle brands. The approach reflects Nio’s broader strategy of relying on distributors in overseas markets rather than pursuing capital-intensive direct sales.

Singaporean customers can reserve the Firefly EV through Wearnes, with the brand’s first local showroom scheduled to open in late January. Firefly is positioned as a compact, urban-focused electric vehicle aimed at competing with brands such as Mini and Smart.
“The Firefly EV is compact and agile, effortlessly navigating tight parking spaces and complex driving scenarios, and it also offers ample space to meet diverse real-life needs,” Chris Chen, Nio’s head of global business, said.

Nio said Firefly will serve as its pioneer brand for overseas growth as the company continues to expand internationally through distributor partnerships. Management has reiterated a target to operate in 40 countries and regions by the end of the year.
The Firefly brand was officially unveiled at Nio Day 2024 in December 2024, with the Firefly EV launching in China in April 2025. Deliveries have already begun in Europe with left-hand drive versions similar to those sold domestically.

Chen said earlier on Thursday that Nio also plans to launch its electric vehicles in Australia and New Zealand, with market entry expected in the second half of 2026, as the company increases its focus on right-hand drive markets where it sees stronger commercial potential.
